If someone around you appears to be struggling, you can ask, listen and offer support.
Start talking
Taking a few moments to talk to a friend or family about difficulties they may have with betting can be a challenging conversation but could make a huge difference in their life.
Tips for starting a conversation
- Encourage the person who is experiencing difficulty with betting to seek help, but don't be pushy if they are not ready to act - being forceful may actually make the issue worse.
- Inform them of their support options such as Gamblers Help, their local GP, or a financial counselling service.
- Be prepared for an emotional response and do not take this personally. They may feel a sense of shame, guilt or remorse.
- Don't expect immediate response or results. Changing betting habits can be a difficult process and takes time.
Look after yourself, too
We understand that gambling can impact families, friends and colleagues in various ways. There are support organisations that provide advice specifically for those affected by a friend or family member's difficulties with betting.
